This is one of my favourite flavored Japanese treats. An oldie but a goody. “Melon Pan”, (Melon bread) is a melon flavoured sweet bread which has probably been one of the most popular items in bakeries in Japan for 20 years.

It is usually a light bread with a melon smell and taste baked into a sugary crust. Nice for a sugar hit and I have never seen these anywhere but Japan.

Have you come across any other strange flavoured pastries?

  1. Is it really melon flavored? I thought the name referred only to the appearance.

Yep, it certainly is. Have a smell next time you get one. Some even have a green tinge to hammer home the point

I Recently went into a bakery in the San Fernando Area and they seems to have something very similar but it tasted like cinnamon and I think they lady call it “pan dulce” or Mexican sweet bread, however i still trying to fin “Melon Pan” in the west L.A area, last time I tasted it was 4 years ago in kyoto, Kyoto prefecture.
